"Chronicles of an Age of Darkness" by Hugh Cook. All nine of them are brilliant, and they're out of print.

"The Worm Ouroborous" by E.R Edison; how could anyone leave this off a list of the best Fantasy novels?

The "Renshai" series by Mickey Z Reichert; second book in the series in particular.

Hi Samuel, thanks for stopping by. I totally agree re the difference between vanity pub and self pub. The tools are now there for someone committed enough and with the right commercial mind to push their writing as a business which they have full control of.

Of course there are still issues, e.g. some self pub writers may not take their quality control that seriously, which tars everyone with the poorly edited/produced brush. At the moment the traditional publishing industry has what appears to be an unbeatable supply chain and economy of scale. I may be wrong, of course, but it leaves me concerned that on my own I don't have enough time to both market my work and make it profitable, and write more.

Have you explored the self pub route?

There's a big difference between vanity publishing and modern self publishing; if you're a good businessman and can promote your own writing as a business, then self-publishing is a viable route. There's some crossover when it comes to PoD publishing, since PoD services cater to both self-publishers and vanity types. But remember the old adage: "There are three doors into publishing; the front door, the back door and the trap door. Mainstream is the front-door, self-publishing is the back-door, and vanity is the trap-door."

Hi Redhead, thanks for your kind comment. I love reading books on mythology too, I should have mentioned that in my post... I have a collection covering Celtic myths, the Vikings, Arthurian legends, ancient Greece, Roman and Byzantine empires, Babylon, Mesapotamia, Japan, Australian Aborigine people and Native Americans. Not sure if I left anyone out. These stories are both treasure and inspiration, fuel to start the fires of my own mythology.

Patrick Rothfuss showed up in my tag surfer, and then your first paragraph really grabbed my attention. . . can't stop. . .reading. . .

I only recently got into what's considered fantasy about 2 years ago. always considered myself a hardcore SF fan. But I LOVE mythology. I read mythology textbooks for fun, one of my favorite movies is the original Clash of the Titans, my favorite part of Neil Gaiman's American Gods was looking everyone up on Wikipedia to find the myths.

Once I realized how intertwined mythology and fantasy are, fantasy stories were easy to get into.

Thanks for the insightful comment, Chris. I recognise that there are valid and compelling reasons for e-books to take the dominant share of novel sales in future years, I just think it's going to take a while longer than some suggest. After posting I saw a really interesting article on Nathan Bransford's forum on <a href="http://forums.nathanbransford.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1967" rel="nofollow">top 10 reasons why e-books might not eat the world</a>. Some valid concerns there too, will be interesting to see how this pans out.

I'd be as sad to see the online book replace the printed book as I would to see music downloads consign the CD to history.

Unless we want every piece of media we have to be 'virtual' and sell or burn our bookshelves and CD towers we need to support the printed word and the pressed silver disc.

Having said that, the end of both is, I think, inevitable due to environmental concerns/constraints. I have close to 1000 CD's at home. If I were just starting to build a collection and could have that amount of music in a high quality format and save all those materials, I think I'd do it. Granted with books it's slightly different but with the way Kindle and i-Pads have taken off, not everyone will keep shelves of books.

Maybe authors wouldn't want them to... If, eager to air their 'green' credentials, people buy books secondhand, the author won't see a penny. In that case, an online/downloadable book is a more palatable option.

Setting a scene is so difficult, i find, in science fiction -- when describing something that is not familiar to everyday comtemporary life. This where i get lost with some novels, there being no point of reference. So maybe best to keep it brief and simple.
