About
Welcome to the blog of Scott Foley, a fantasy writer in the UK.
Writing, in career terms, is my first love, though varied jobs in retail, recruitment, careers advice and photography have paid the earthly bills while my head is in another reality.
My last ten years were spent developing a fantasy world which, at times became worryingly more concrete than the real world. I think I know which is which now, but you can never be too sure.
Warlords of The Dreaming God is my first novel (soon to be followed by a sequel, Mistress of The Gatestones). My work has not yet been published and I am looking for an agent or publisher. If you happen to be one, let me know if you like what you see.
I decided to blog about the experiences I have had, and continue to have along my writing journey. You might wonder why the thoughts of an unpublished author might interest you. Well for one, I learnt a lot by doing. Trying things out for myself. I don’t have a Masters Degree in creative writing. I learnt everything (so far) by trial and error, practice and lots of time to reflect, rewrite and rewrite again. I learn every day.
There is a lot of great advice out there from people better qualified than me to talk about the ‘art’ of writing. Rather, I am taking this from a different angle. I will be talking about the stuff that sometimes falls through the cracks. Thoughts on being creative, worlds, characters, stories. And tackling the many issues facing a writer in the act of creation.
I will also talk in more detail about my influences and work. Some of it is just about fantasy, some applies broadly to general fiction. If you don’t agree with any of it, that’s ok. These are just my thoughts. But I hope you find it interesting, and if you are a fellow writer, maybe even helpful. Let me know.
